Where to stay in Kadıköy: districts, transport and hotels
This guide explains which part of Kadıköy may suit you, how to get there from the European side, and which catalogue hotels are in the area.
Kadıköy at a glance
Kadıköy is a large, densely populated district on the Asian side of Istanbul, on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara. Its area is 25 km² and its population was 467,919 in 2023. It partly faces the historic city centre (modern Fatih) on the European side of the Bosphorus.
The area is anchored by the ferry quay and the open-air Kadıköy market; it was founded in antiquity as Chalcedon. Expect fishmongers and spice stalls in the market, and independent cafés and galleries around Moda.
Getting to Kadıköy from the European side
The simplest route is the ferry: boats run to the Kadıköy pier from Eminönü and Karaköy, and the crossing takes about twenty minutes. For current departure times, see the Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü timetable published by Şehir Hatları.
By rail, Ayrılık Çeşmesi is the key station: Marmaray and the M4 line (Kadıköy–Sabiha Gökçen) share one ticket hall and you can change directly between them. Ayrılıkçeşme is the only Marmaray stop with a transfer to the M4.
Which area suits whom?
Market and ferry quay. The natural starting point if you arrive by boat: market streets, seafood and street food.
Moda. A residential part of Kadıköy running along the Marmara shore, with shops and cafés, a waterfront promenade, a park and a pier.
Yeldeğirmeni. Known for street art: the area was chosen for the artists of the 2012 Mural Istanbul festival, and its walls carry murals by street artists from around the world.
Bahariye. The Süreyya Opera House on Bahariye Street opened on 6 March 1927 as the first musical theatre on the Anatolian side and reopened as an opera house in 2007.
