Karaköy hotels: where to stay in Galata and Karaköy

Galata and Karaköy are a practical option for staying in Beyoğlu without being on Taksim Square. This guide covers transport, nearby sights and the hotels in the area.

Where Galata and Karaköy are

Galata Tower is in the Galata part of Beyoğlu district. Today it serves as an exhibition space and museum, and it is a symbol of Beyoğlu and Istanbul.

The lower station of the Tünel funicular is in Karaköy, on the Karaköy side of Galata Bridge. The Tünel is a historic underground funicular with two stations, connecting Karaköy and Beyoğlu.

Getting around: tram, funicular and metro

The T1 Kabataş–Bağcılar tram line links stops including Karaköy, Eminönü and Sultanahmet. At Karaköy station you can change to the F2 Karaköy–Beyoğlu historic tunnel line and to sea services.

The Tünel line is 573 metres long and opened on 17 January 1875. Its upper station is at one end of İstiklal Avenue, on the Şişhane side.

Şişhane metro station (M2) is about 300 metres from Galata Tower, roughly a 2-minute walk. From Karaköy to the tower it is about 500 metres uphill, an 8–10 minute walk.

Nearby

Istanbul Modern is inside the Galataport complex in Beyoğlu district. Turkey's first museum of modern and contemporary art, it opened on 11 December 2004. The Tophane tram stop is 250 metres from the museum and the Karaköy ferry pier is 800 metres away.

The upper Tünel station is at one end of İstiklal Avenue. From Galata Tower, Taksim Square is about 1.2 km away: one stop on the M2 or a 10–15 minute walk. For hotels around Taksim, see our Taksim hotels guide.
